Thread Lift vs. Fillers in Mississauga: What Helps Early Jowls?

    Written ByRK Medical Aesthetics

When your jawline looks softer or the skin beside your mouth begins to sag, it is natural to ask whether a thread lift or filler would help. Both may change the appearance of the lower face, but they address different problems. More product is not necessarily more lift.

If you are comparing a thread lift and dermal fillers in Mississauga, start with the cause of the change: mild skin sagging, lost volume, limited jawline definition or a combination. This guide explains the distinction without promising the result of a surgical facelift.

First, work out what is making the jawline look different

“Jowls” can describe several changes around the lower cheeks and jaw. Skin and supporting tissues may have loosened, facial volume may have changed, or the natural shape of the chin and jaw may make a softer contour more noticeable. A photo alone cannot reliably establish which issue matters most.

An in-person assessment should look at your face at rest and in movement, your skin quality, medical history and previous treatments. Bring up the result you actually want: less visible sagging, a clearer jawline or a refreshed appearance. The recommendation should follow that assessment, not a preference to sell one procedure.

What a thread lift is intended to change

A thread lift uses absorbable threads placed beneath the skin to reposition selected tissues. For some people with mild sagging, this can produce a more lifted-looking contour without the incisions of a surgical facelift. See our thread lift treatment page for the clinic's approach.

Threads do not remove excess skin, and the effect is not equivalent to surgery. Results vary and are temporary; settling and swelling can change the early appearance. Substantial laxity or heavier tissues may respond poorly. Ask to see realistic examples and discuss what the procedure would leave unchanged on your own face.

What dermal filler is intended to change

Dermal filler adds volume in selected areas. When lost volume or limited definition contributes to the appearance of the lower face, appropriate placement may improve contour. That is different from removing loose skin or reliably pulling sagging tissue upward.

If the main concern is heaviness rather than a lack of volume, adding filler may not help and can make the lower face look fuller. Product choice also matters: not every filler can be dissolved, and even dissolving hyaluronic acid filler is a medical procedure with limitations. Read our dermal fillers information before deciding whether that approach matches your goal.

A practical way to compare the options

    • Mainly mild sagging: discuss whether threads could make a worthwhile difference, and what their limits are for your tissues.
    • Mainly volume loss or contour: ask whether carefully selected filler could improve the appearance without adding unwanted heaviness.
    • Both issues: a staged plan may be discussed, but every treatment needs its own reason. A combination is not automatically better.
    • More significant loose skin: ask whether a surgical consultation would be more informative than repeated non-surgical treatments.

Neither option treats every cause of a changing jawline. Choosing no treatment, or waiting while you consider alternatives, is also reasonable.

Recovery and risks: do not compare only the appointment time

After threads, swelling, bruising, tenderness or temporary contour irregularities can occur. Other risks include infection, asymmetry, thread visibility or extrusion and persistent discomfort. You may need to change activities while healing; get written instructions for your particular procedure.

Filler may also cause swelling, bruising, tenderness or lumps. Less common complications include infection and unwanted inflammatory reactions. Rare accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause tissue damage, vision loss or stroke. Ask how the provider recognises and manages complications, and what urgent symptoms require immediate help.

For either treatment, discuss medications, previous fillers or threads, health conditions and any upcoming dental work or procedures. Do not stop prescribed medication on your own. Avoid treating immediately before a major event, and ask how follow-up and unexpected concerns will be handled.

    Questions for your Mississauga consultation

    • Is my concern mainly skin laxity, volume loss or my natural anatomy?
    • What visible change is realistic, and what will remain the same?
    • Why would you recommend threads, filler, neither or a surgical opinion?
    • What are the full costs, likely maintenance needs and recovery limitations?
    • What is your plan if a complication or an unsatisfactory result occurs?

Our guide to natural-looking aesthetic results offers more questions to help communicate your preferences. No procedure can guarantee a particular age, appearance or duration of improvement.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can a thread lift improve early jowls?

It may improve mild sagging in a suitable person, but the result is limited and temporary. Skin quality, tissue weight and the cause of the jowls matter. More substantial loose skin may need a surgical assessment rather than more threads or filler.

Can jawline filler lift sagging skin?

Filler primarily adds volume and contour. It may improve the appearance of a jawline when lost volume or limited definition is part of the problem, but it does not remove loose skin. Adding volume to an already heavy lower face may not give the result you want.

Which lasts longer: a thread lift or filler?

There is no reliable single answer for every person. Thread type, filler product, treatment area, technique and your own tissue response affect duration. Both are temporary approaches; ask for the expected range and maintenance plan for your specific treatment.

Can I combine threads and dermal fillers?

Sometimes, when an assessment identifies both mild tissue sagging and volume loss. Combining treatments is not automatically better or necessary. Ask why each step is recommended, whether treatment should be staged and what extra risks and costs it adds.
